It is finally time to share with you my wedding dress, the product of so much work and thought, which has been occupying me for months…

A MIX OF PATTERNS

In my mind, the dress had to be a long skirt with small cap sleeves, an original open back with a small flow, a belt to mark the waist and a small train that was not too voluminous. Here is the summary, but basically it is not so easy to find about the pattern(s) I needed.

To start, I chose the bottom of the skirt from the Artesane course to sew the wedding dress. A few gathers but not too many and the size seemed ideal to me, with a small train that fit me well.

The upper part of the dress is a little more worked and for the front I started from the front of the Magnolia dress pattern from Deer and Doe. It is ideal, with a cross, a back and a shoulder width that allowed me to add additional cap sleeves.

Regarding the back, I first thought of the back of the Belladone dress from Deer and Doe, then after my first picture I realized that the darts at the bottom of the back did not give the desired result.

Then I thought of the concept of a personalized dress, including the beautiful diamond back offered by Charlotte Auzou. I still had to change the base of this back, but I will tell you about it through my different pictures.

The season made me hesitate a little between small sleeves or lace cap sleeves. The small cap option convinced me anyway and I got my hands on the cap sleeves of the Syracuse top by Anne Kerdilès, which I have used many times.

The width is ideal and the heels are not, I definitely wanted to avoid such thin lace.

THE CANVAS STAGE
The dress of my dreams was already in my head and the most difficult thing was to achieve the desired result. For this, the canvas is of course more than the necessary step. And when I say canvas, I mean canvases!

Once all the patterns were together, I wanted to deal with the first canvas for the upper part of the dress.

I was less afraid and when the final upper pattern was in place I was left without a canvas.

To make my canvas I chose a white polyester crepe from Les Coupons de Saint Pierre, which came close to creating the final silk crepe in a much cheaper and more flexible version than a classic pattern canvas. This was easy to sew and retouch, while giving me a better idea of ​​the final shape of the dress.

The first fabric allowed me to modify the front to perfectly adapt to my morphology. In particular, I removed at least 2cm from the upper part of the princess cut’s join.

Several tests were necessary for a perfect fit, so it was absolutely necessary to sew several fabrics.

As for the back, it was more complicated to come to the idea I had in mind. My first version of the back by Belladonne did not convince me at all because of the waist darts. So I went back to the apple by Charlotte Auzou, and the first version was already much more beautiful.

But at the armhole seam the lower part of the back meets the front, and that was not what I wanted.

So I changed the back pattern to bring that line down and make it match the top of the side seam. The diagonal is therefore less pronounced, the same for the top of the back where I wanted to go down a few centimetres.

It’s not obvious in the final dress but I had to make 3 canvases to get the result I wanted.

My fourth canvas from the top was to help me figure out how to assemble the dress which I wanted to be fully lined of course, also with a lace applique on the front and back. The top of the back and cap sleeves are made entirely in lace to play with the scallops of the last one.

A lace braid is also added to highlight the neckline and lower back. All of this makes assembly difficult and I wanted to be sure of the way to proceed for the most flattering finish possible.

After these 4 pictures I felt at ease and knew what I was getting into. So the cutting of the fabric could begin. Spoiler alert…yes, cutting silk crepe is extremely stressful, especially on larger pieces like skirts.

PRECIOUS FABRICS
Following my last post about my visit to Stragier to choose the fabrics for my wedding dress, I finally reveal my final choice and the reasons that led me to choose them.

The theme of the wedding was an autumn bohemian touch and although I wanted a long white dress, I wanted to make the fabric quite heavy. I immediately ruled out muslin or fabrics that were too fluid and naturally turned into heavy ivory silk sheets.

When I ordered a sample, I fell in love with the Cristal Calais lace, which is available in 90cm width and 17cm. These two widths are very practical to optimize the necessary lace and especially the 17cm width is quite sufficient to double the belt and prevent the lace from falling.

For the lining, I chose ivory silk crepe de chine to break the slight transparency of the fabric and improve the fall of the final result.

The price of the dress will really depend on the fabrics you choose. On this occasion I wanted to spoil myself, but to limit the investment you can definitely choose crepe and muslin materials in acetate or polyester.

CUTTING THE WEDDING FABRIC
For the delicate part of cutting very fragile and precious fabrics such as silk crepe, 100% silk crepe de chine and Calais lace, I surrounded myself with my acquaintance Mélanie, aka Cousette Chérie.

I have an old wooden floor in my house and in order not to damage the fabric, we put a plastic sheet on the floor before laying the precious fabric on it. Since the fabric is fragile, we avoided needles and preferred weights, and finally, we preferred candles in the house.

The cutting of the skirt pattern in the main fabric and the lining took more than 2 hours to complete. Then I cut the upper parts from very large pieces of fabric that I had left out of the 6 meters of fabric needed for both fabrics.

Then, I attacked the cutting of the lace pieces, without too much stress and without making 3 good checks before each cut, in order to avoid mistakes and especially to make the lace connections.

Lace has a meaning and I started by cutting the top back piece that I wanted to have a scalloped bottom, then I cut the other pieces to match the pattern of the first so that there would be a connection at each joining seam.

The front of the top is completely covered in lace, but it has a princess cut, so I took advantage of lining each piece in the lace that I assembled in the seam allowances. I then assembled the pieces so that the lace seam allowance would not show and would lay nicely on the silk crepe.

SEWING TIPS
Here are a few tips to help you sew the precious materials that make up a wedding dress:

Forget pins and opt for hand basting stitches in the seam allowances, then slowly remove the thread after the assembly stitch. Choose a quality thread that is the right shade of white, it can really make a difference.

Choose a 70 microtex needle to avoid pulling the threads of your silky fabric. Be careful when ironing, test your fabric pieces and use a wet pad if necessary.

Tear the lice and remove it from the seam. This will prevent your lace threads from getting stuck in your sewing machine.

For a more flattering finish, overlock all the pieces before final assembly. Choose an interfacing that is suitable for your fabric to keep your model flexible.

For the skirt: If you have very thin muslin or crepe, you can overlock the edge with your 3-thread sewing machine, but you can also do it with a hemmer foot on your sewing machine or create your edge by hand.

Don’t hesitate to opt for an elastic buttonhole line combined with covered buttons for a perfect result. The secret is to take your time and not stress, the result will be even more beautiful!

ASSEMBLY OF THE DRESS
A few canvases helped me fully understand the assembly of the dress and to be more comfortable during the final sewing. So I started with the top of the dress. First, I attacked the main fabric covered in lace and the lining, at the princess cut level in the front.

I also sewed a lace braid along the edge of the front neckline, sewing it into the main fabric first before sewing the previous seam, before sewing the lining. The little detail of the lace braid is perfect for adding a refined touch to the design.

The back was more complicated to assemble, but by taking your time and using the basting stitch to make sure nothing slipped before sewing, the fittings are almost perfect. second hand wedding dress

Then I added a bit of originality to the assembly of the lace belt, placing the lace edge over the top of the skirt. I made the belt in a single strip of fabric the length of my waist to avoid side seams.

This was also when I sewed the elastic buttonhole in the middle of the back together

To finish, I attacked the seam where the sides of the skirt meet in the main fabric and lining, then gathered the entire height of the skirt and joined it at the waist. I then finished the belt lining by hand, placing 13 small buttons on the back.

The final touch was the hem of the main fabric, which I hand-sewn, and it took me a little over 3 hours to achieve the beautiful flowing result I wanted.

I called Mélanie, alias Cousette Chérie, who was once again my shock witness, to mark the right height. She helped me make marks to cut the dress to my size when I wore the dress with heels on in the evening.

The hem of the lining was made with serger at the hem, much faster!

The final touch, which I sewed a week before the wedding, was the lace closure of the upper back with two small white snaps and a lace knit tie that tied and fell at the back for a little bohemian touch.

MY DREAM DRESS
After what I estimate to be about 60 hours of contemplation, pattern making and sewing… The dress I had in mind came to life before my eyes and I am very happy with it. It was exactly as I imagined it and strangely enough I worked on it so much that the emotion was diluted in the sewing. Once worn, it’s like it’s always been there and there are no tears on my side but a lot of satisfaction.

MY IMPRESSIONS AFTER THE WEDDING
The dress lasted until the evening, unlike my feet in my beautiful sandals 😉 It’s still a little stained on the bottom, especially on the train, but that should be fixed with a good hand wash. The hand-rolling also came off, which wasn’t easy because I didn’t take it apart all day!

It’s not easy to walk around in such a long dress and if I do it again I’ll probably try to size down the skirt to make it easier to move around without ruining the cut of the dress.

The dress was very comfortable to wear late into the night or rather into the early morning, despite the weight of the heavy crepe of the skirt.

Like all brides, I received many compliments on my dress at the wedding, but this resonates even more when you realise all the investment that went into creating it.

I do not regret this adventure that has advanced me a lot, pushed my limits, will remain the most beautiful piece of my dressing room and will make my wife’s eyes shine.
